During his life as an artist, Leroy designed 4 album covers for Sun Ra and his Arkestra. He is a fixture of the Philly music scene, and has been for decades. He is 93. He has trouble with his hearing and his vision, but that doesn’t stop him from making art or being part of the conversation. Through his collaborations with Sun Ra, Leroy anticipated the kind of afro-futuristic visions we see being fulfilled today in zines, art galleries, fiction, and in cinema. Leroy was kind enough to sit for a portrait, excerpts of which you can listen to below.
